RMR_Format: Code for Format of Distribution

Format is defined as the means of delivery to the audience or user, whether intangible or tangible product. May also be used to describe the medium on which a resource in a library or archival collection is stored.
Code Name Description
AC Audio cassette Audio Compact Cassette (as introduced by Phillips in 1963) magnetic tape medium capable of storing an analog sound signal. For other audio cassette tape formats use AT (Audio tape other)
AD Audio compact disc Compact disc digital audio (CDDA) compliant audio data recording. Use for both standard and mini audio CDs
AT Audio tape other Audio tape formats other than the Compact Cassette, e.g., reel-to-reel, DAT, 8-Track cartridge or other formats not typcially used for distributing products to consumers
BR Broadcast Television, satellite or radio broadcast
CD Computer disk Computer-based resource delivered to user via portable medium such as CD-ROM, CD-R or floppy disk
DP Dedicated playback device Dedicated audio or video playback device on which the resource is recorded on internal storage medium (e.g., solid-state memory or hard drive) that cannot be re-recorded or removed by the consumer
DV Digital Video Disc Digital Video Disc (DVD), also known as Digital Versatile Disc, which stores sound, video, or data in UDF (Universal Disk Format). Use for all DVD-related formats
FI Film Photographic film negative or slide, motion picture film, filmstrip
IN Internet Interactive resource or web-based service (chat room, web-based applet) accessed interactively on the Internet, as well as computer resources (software application or data file) available via Internet download or e-mail attachment
LP Live performance An event, whether potential or actual, at which a stage or musical performance would occur
MF Microform Microfilm, microfiche and micro-opaque materials
PA Paper Use also for other paper-like products typically used for printed products, including photographic prints
TR Transparency Transparent sheet used with an overhead projector for visual materials
VC Video cassette VHS (Video Home System) cassette magnetic tape medium capable of storing analog video and/or audio signals. Use for either PALS or NTSC. For non-VHS video tape formats use VT (Video tape other)
VD Video compact disc Video compact disc capable of storing still pictures, video and/or audio encoded in MPEG-1
VT Video tape other Video tape other than VHS, capable of storing analog video and/or audio signals, e.g., U-matic, Betacam, Hi8 or other formats not typically used for distribution to consumers
